Pupils prepare gifts for Coventry’s elderly residents

Pupils are spreading festive cheer amongst the city’s older generation this winter by donating gift hampers to care home residents.

The school is supporting Alambie House, on Coundon Road and The Willows, on Westminster Road, which looks after patients with dementia, as part of its Festive Winter Gift Programme (FWGP) to share gifts to spread cheer among some of the older folk they care for.

The pupil’s charitable endeavours form part of the school’s Festive Winter Gift Programme, which sees pupils getting involved in fundraising activities, donating gifts to people in need of support and giving their time volunteering during the festive season – all to make a positive contribution to the wider community through charitable actions.

Each of the school’s 20 form groups were tasked with preparing a hamper filled with winter necessities such as socks, gloves, diabetic treats and toiletries. A group of staff and students then visited each care home on Friday 14 December, to deliver them.

Hannah Waterer, Manager of Willows Care Home, said:

“It was such a lovely afternoon with the students from Eden Girls’ School bringing in gifts for our residents, building important community relationships.”

Year 9 pupil Aliza Ahsan said:

“Taking part in the Festive Winter Gift Programme has been a wonderful and rewarding experience. In the spirit of the festive season, it is important we remember to support the vulnerable in our local community.”

Principal Saqub Sheikh said:

“I am very proud of our pupils. As a school community we are keen to ensure that people receive gifts this winter so they know that people are thinking of them. It has been very heartening to see our pupils coming together to organise the collection of donations.

“Through our charitable endeavours we aim for it to have a lifelong impact on the girls, so they continue to contribute further to good causes in our local area and realise it can be very rewarding.”
