Governor Biographies

Afzal Ismail (Chair)

Afzal is a qualified accountant and a member of the Chartered Institute of Auditors. He is currently Executive Director of Orbit Group, one of the largest housing agencies in the region. His role includes overseeing the delivery of professional corporate support services to all the departments within the company. He is responsible for the risk and compliance functions, as well as the ICT and Contact Centre. Afzal grew up in Coventry after arriving from Malawi at the age of 10. He attended a local comprehensive school and is passionate about education.

Yaseen Ahmedabadi

Yaseen works for the NHS in the field of clinical IT systems, which involves working with consultants, nurses and support staff. Yaseen is actively involved with various voluntary organisations in the Nuneaton and wider Warwickshire area and is a Strategic Board Member of Warwickshire Race Equality Partnership. He has a keen interest in sport, enjoys socialising and travelling.

Abdul Rahman Ali

Abdul Rahman has two degrees in ICT and Business, as well as Accounting. He currently runs a private tuition club to help disadvantaged children with their GCSEs. He has been a champion of Eden Girls’ Coventry from the start and worked tirelessly to galvanise local communities. His hobbies include travelling and football.

Sarah Bhayat

Sarah has extensive experience of partnership and community work in the local area. She is currently the Community Involvement Coordinator at St Peter’s Centre. A champion of diversity, Sarah believes the school will raise the aspirations of deprived and disadvantaged communities in the city.

Dilara Hoque

Dilara read Science at the University of Warwick and has 10 years of managerial experience in different industries. She has also worked as an independent financial advisor. Dilara is passionate about making a difference to the lives of young people in Coventry.  She has chaired the Advisory Board for Radford Children’s Centre. She was previously a vice chair of Radford Primary School, where she served as a Governor for three years.

Yunus Kathawala

Yunus is a successful Business Systems Analyst and Developer for one of the largest social housing firms in London. With extensive experience in this field, he has project-managed large, complex ventures. Locally, Yunus is the Secretary of Hillfields Muslim Association and has played an active role in championing the school. He is keen to apply his skills and expertise to help the local community.

Mohammed Akhtar Khan

Mohammed works for the National Grid as a Control Room Engineer, where he manages the safe and efficient supply of gas to households in the UK. As a trained assessor, he plays an instrumental role in delivering assessment frameworks, carrying out appraisals of trainees who are new to the field.

Mohammed has amassed experience of various sectors through his diverse and varied roles, working in Customer Support, as a Business Analyst and also as a Project Assistant.

In his spare time, he is heavily involved in community work and outreach projects and regularly liaises with statutory bodies such as the local Council, police, faith groups and voluntary bodies. He hopes to foster strong links and positive relationships between the school and the local community.

Sumaiya Patel

Sumaiya is a Parent Governor and a full-time mum. She worked for the NHS in the community mental health outreach team, a role which involved helping service users to access help and support. As a Parent Governor, Sumaiya aims to liaise with parents and the staff at Eden Girls’ School to ensure everyone’s views are well-represented, as well as assisting the school in raising standards for all pupils.

Anne Pluska

Anne is a qualified social worker who also holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She currently manages Coventry’s Safeguarding Children Board’s interagency safeguarding training programme, which requires in-depth knowledge and experience of safeguarding legislation and how to create a culture of safeguarding within a variety of contexts. She is accustomed to working with community, statutory and voluntary agencies to deliver high-quality safeguarding training, and her expertise and communications skills will be instrumental to her role as Governor.

Anne has always been passionate about improving children’s situations and life chances, and has engaged in voluntary youth work in the past. She believes that every child – whatever their background and circumstances – is entitled to a good standard of education and personal development opportunities, geared to their particular needs.

Anne feels that the strengths that come from diverse communities working together can contribute to pupils’ enrichment and the success of Eden Girls’ School, Coventry. She is wholly supportive of the values and goals of the school and will work alongside other members of the Governing Body to ensure the school delivers on its vision to nurture today’s young people and inspire tomorrow’s leaders.

Abdullahi Shehu

Dr Abdullah is a Consultant Neurologist and the Divisional Medical Director at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, with lead responsibility for Multiple Sclerosis. An authority in this field, he has authored several articles for medical journals and lectures at the Warwick University Medical School. A resident of Coventry, Dr Abdullah chairs the Coventry Muslim Forum and is a champion of inter-faith relations. He is passionate about transforming the lives of young people through education and believes the school will improve the educational standards and progression opportunities for girls in Coventry.

Ghulam Vohra

Ghulam is now retired, but previously worked as the Curriculum Operations Manager at South and City College, Birmingham. He has extensive experience of teaching, quality assurance processes and curriculum development and played a pivotal role in the Ofsted inspection that rated the college as ‘good’.  Ghulam resides in Coventry and is passionate about his local community. He has served on various boards in Coventry over the past two decades and is currently a Governor at a local secondary school. He chairs a local community sports youth club and is involved with local faith and community organisations. With his wide-ranging experience, Ghulam will contribute to the development of the curriculum for the school.

Linda Thompson (Principal)

Prior to taking up the role of School Principal, Linda worked as a Director of School Improvement within Star Academies and has also been Executive Principal of Tauheedul Islam Boys’ High School. Previously, Linda worked as a Senior Regional Adviser for School Improvement with responsibilities for North West schools in the National Challenge and prior to that, as the Deputy National Lead on Assessment for Learning. Working alongside the New Schools’ Network as an Education Adviser, Linda has provided leadership support and guidance to more than 50 Free School proposer groups.

Nida Ellahi

Nida has been a teacher of English for over twenty years, primarily in Birmingham schools. She has worked in a diverse range of schools, as well as at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Nida has experience of leading an English department, where she played an instrumental role in taking the department from a satisfactory rating to Ofsted ‘outstanding’ in a short period of time. Her interests include walking the Great British landscape and reading.
