Pupils visit dreaming spires of Oxford for university taster day

Pupils in Year 10 have been encouraged to aim high in their future university and career aspirations with an Oxford Pathways Taster Day visit to the University of Oxford.

The city is known for its ‘dreaming spires’ and the aspirational education trip saw the pupils given a tour around the awe-inspiring surroundings of St Anne’s College and Merton College to get a taste of day-to-day university living.

The young scholars were also given a talk about opportunities available to them in the future at the University of Oxford and on insights into aspects of student life, including finance information.

Academics then presented three mini lectures – on economics, biomedical engineering and archaeology.

Year 10 pupil Sara Omar said:

“Our visit to the University of Oxford was really inspiring and gave us a real flavour of what it might be like to study there. I feel really motivated now and know that with hard work and determination I too may be lucky enough to attend.”

Principal Saqub Sheikh said:

“The University of Oxford trip was truly inspiring for our girls and it fully met our STAR values and created an ambition and fire in them to succeed. We have high aspirations for our pupils and want to inspire and encourage them to aim high towards a whole new world of opportunities that they can achieve.

“There are some who may think that the University of Oxford is out of reach but we firmly believe that our pupils are the brightest and best, with strong academic potential. The visit has really enabled them to understand that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.”

Dr Lucy Busfield, Outreach Officer for St Anne’s College and Joint-Coordinator of the Year 10 Oxford Pathways Programme, said:

“We were very pleased to welcome students from Eden Girls’ School to the University. We hope that this visit has helped to dispel some myths about Oxford and encouraged the students to consider making an application to the University in the future.”
